How Does Summer Heat Impact Your Pool?

There’s so much to look forward to about the summertime. From vacations to longer days, it is a great season that many call their favorite. With the warmer weather, often comes more days spent by the pool, which is certainly exciting. What may be a bit less exciting is how summer heat may have an effect on your pool. That’s right, whether you’ve thought about it every day since you got a pool or whether this is a total newsflash, there are things you can do to mitigate the potentially negative effects extreme heat can have on your summer pool oasis.

Heat and Your Pool

Before we chat fixes, let’s discuss a few ways heat can affect your pool:

Chlorine

Heat can affect your pool’s chlorine levels, as it causes excessive evaporation. When water is evaporated, the demand for chlorine that is contained within it goes up. This evaporation is so extreme, that according to Sciencing.com, ultraviolet rays can reduce chlorine by up to 90 percent in two hours.

pH Levels

If you aren’t mindful of your chlorine levels, this can easily affect your pH levels, which can lead to a whole slew of other problems, including bacteria growth.

Evaporation

As mentioned with the increased chlorine demand, pools in excessive heat can experience a good deal of evaporation. This is not only costly for the homeowner who needs to replace hundreds of gallons of water, but also risky, as you are introducing gallons of different chemically-made-up water to the already-chlorinated pool.

Bacteria

Caused largely by chemical imbalances which can be a result of excessive heat, bacteria can begin to grow, thrive, and multiply in pools that are too hot. Bacteria thrive in warm water, which is yet another result of excessive summer heat.

Temperature

Perhaps most obviously, the summer heat can cause your pool to rise to extreme temperatures. This can ruin the swimming experience on a hot day, as no one likes to swim on a hot day in a seemingly even hotter pool.

What Can Be Done?

If you’re wondering what can be done to combat these issues (other than changing the weather), wonder no more. A couple of suggestions are below to help your pool beat the heat:

  • Run the filter at night
  • Install shade for your pool with trees or other structures
  • Use a white pool cover
  • Drain a large amount of water and refill
  • Install a water fountain
  • Check and clean skimmer often
  • Ensure regular maintenance and water testing
