Sunscreen Tips for Summer

You’ve heard it plenty of times before: wear sunscreen and re-apply regularly. Though by no means a fun step in enjoying a day of fun in the sun, it is certainly a critical one to keep you and your family safe from the sun’s dangerous rays. Read on as we discuss some tips that may help you and your family best utilize sunscreen to stay safe this summer.

All About Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a hugely important part of staying safe in the hot summer sun. Not only that, it also helps to prevent aging of the skin and some types of skin cancer. Though the research on cancer and sunscreen’s prevention are newer, sunscreen itself is not at all new. In fact, sunscreen was invented in the mid-1930’s by the founder of L’Oreal. Since then, it has become a staple for anyone looking to spend a day outdoors in the summer sun.

Tips For Summer Sunscreen

Here are some tips for how you can keep your skin looking good and healthy in the summer with sunscreen:

Know Your Body

There are several factors that can make you more prone to the harmful effects of UV radiation. Pale skin, blonde or red hair, and family history of skin cancers can make you more prone to sun damage. Be sure to take that very seriously as you regularly apply sunscreen.

Know The Sun’s Patterns

Be wary of the times the sun is brightest in your area, such as late morning until about 3 or 4 in the afternoon. Try to avoid the sun at this time if at all possible. If this is not possible, then be sure to apply even more sunscreen.

Read Labels

Reading the labels of the sunscreen you choose is critical. Only sunscreens with broad protection can provide protection from skin cancer, so be sure to get one that does this. This should be clear as it can be labeled “broad spectrum” after being cleared by the FDA. It is also a good idea to have a good understanding of what ingredients are in your sunscreen. Are they harmful? Natural?

Re-apply Often

You will want to ensure you are applying at least every two hours. The FDA says this should be more frequent when swimming or sweating profusely. Be generous with your application, too.

Get a Good SPF

MD Anderson suggests an SPF of no less than 30. This is a “tipping point” of sorts when it comes to SPFs; more is not always better, but 30 is a sweet spot where you are getting a good amount of protection.

Supplement

Sunscreen is great when worn with a cute swimsuit, but it is even better and more effective when worn with lip balm or a hat or even sunglasses. The style will be chic and so will your skin in 20 years!
